What Is Serrapeptase And How Does It Work In The Body?

Serrapeptase is an enzyme that was first discovered in the intestine of silkworms. Serratia bacteria in the worms produce the enzyme to dissolve the silkworm’s cocoon, allowing the worm to emerge as a moth. The silkworm also uses this enzyme to allow it to feed on tough mulberry leaves. These days, serrapeptase supplements are not derived from silkworms, but rather from a natural fermentation process.

Serrapeptase is a protease enzyme, which means it helps the body digest protein, therefore clearing out protein deposits that are not serving a useful purpose in your body. It is also a powerful, natural anti-inflammatory, making it helpful in treating conditions that come with overall pain, swelling, and inflammation.

It has been widely used in the management of pain and inflammation related to joints, sports-related chronic muscular swelling, sprain, scar, ruptured ligaments, chronic swelling and injuries, sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tooth extraction, and post-surgery inflammation.

Serrapeptase is also beneficial to cardiovascular health as it dissolves fibrin and plaque without harming the living tissue. This can help decrease arterial blockages, improving blood pressure and alleviating stress on the heart. It also reduces the inflammation in blood vessels, decreasing cholesterol accumulation and narrowing of the arteries.

Serrapeptase must be taken on an empty stomach in order to obtain the systemic anti-inflammatory benefits. If you consume it with a meal, your body will use it to digest the food in your intestines. For this reason, supplements are best taken first thing in the morning or just before bed.
