What Are The Health Benefits of Holy Basil?

Tulsi or Holy Basil is an important herb in Ayurvedic medicine, the traditional medicine of India. It is known as the “Queen of Herbs” and in Sanskrit means ‘the incomparable one.’ Holy Basil is not the same as the basil you likely already have in your pantry, even though both plants are members of the mint family. Preparations are made from the leaves, stems, and seeds of the plant and it has a wide range of health-promoting properties.

#1. Helps the body deal with stress. Holy Basil is an adaptogen, meaning it helps normalize the stress response in the body so that over time, the body is more stable, peaceful, and calm.

#2. Stabilizes blood sugar. Tulsi has a noticeable effect on lowering blood sugar levels and improving insulin sensitivity.

#3. Has antioxidant properties. Holy Basil leaf powder has been shown to combat free radicals and improve liver and kidney functions.

#4. Reduces inflammation. Tulsi is a natural COX-2 inhibitor, which is an inflammatory enzyme. Inhibiting inflammation has multiple benefits for the body, including better heart health, less joint pain, and improved digestive function.

#5. Supports respiratory system. Holy Basil helps to liquify and mobilize mucus, helping to reduce cough and congestion.

#6. Shows anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties. The primary active compounds in tulsi, eugenol, has been shown to help fight bacteria, viruses, and yeast overgrowth such as candida.

From the leaves to the seed, holy basil is considered a tonic for the body, mind, and spirit.
